Published by Abbeville Press Publishers-New York 1989  signed by  art director/author  Phillip Kaplan and Wing Commander Geoffrey Page.  This book with pictures and words capture the epic aerial combats in the dramatic weeks from 10 July until 31 October 1940.  In this time frame the Luftwaffe attempted to wipe out the Royal Air Force concentrating their attacks on air bases, radar sites and command centers.  At the conclusion of this epic aerial battle which  Churchill referred to  " their finest hour."  Not only had the RAF survived but had in fact caused the Luftwaffe to change tactics and attempt to bomb the British into submission.  This was attempted by constant night bombings (known at the Blitz) of cities, mainly London.  This every night bombing lasted from 7 th of September 1940 to 11 May 1941.

Signatures in this book areGeoffrey Page  Alan Geoffrey Page, DSO, OBE, DFC & BAR (16 May 1920 – 3 August 2000), known as Geoffrey Page, was an officer in the Royal Air Force who served  from 1939–1946 . He participated in the Battle of Britain, and was shot down. He was badly burned when his aircraft was destroyed, and was lucky to survive. He underwent many surgeries on his way to recovery, and was a founding member of the Guinea Pig Club. He eventually passed a medical exam and returned to active service, becoming one of Britain's most successful fighter pilots.  He was credited with 15 kills  (10 solo, 5 shared, and 3 damaged).  He left the RAF in 1946.  In retirement, as well as remaining the driving force of the Guinea Pig Club, Page founded the Battle of Britain Trust. This raised more than £1 million, with which the Battle of Britain memorial was erected overlooking the Straights of Dover to commemorate those who kept Nazi Germany at bay. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1995 for his efforts. In 1981 Page published his autobiography, titled Tale of a Guinea Pig. The book carried the dedication "To Archie McIndoe, whose surgeon's fingers gave me back my pilot's hands." In 1999 a revised edition was released, titled Shot Down in Flames.  Geoffrey Page died on 3 August 2000.

Phillip KaplanPhilip Kaplan is the author of more than forty books on aviation, military and naval subjects. Philip Kaplan was born in California and is a former art director of the American magazine Playboy. In the 1980s he started working for himself with an idea for a book about the hundreds of thousands of Americans who served in England during the war and spent a lot of time interviewing veterans he became more interested in doing more books about the war. He moved to Cheltenham, UK after meeting his wife.  His teaming with Richard Collier lead to this wonderful book.  He worked with Richard Collier in putting this wonderful book together. 

The book was purchased by me at a aviation dinner in Tustin California in 1992.  It was new at time of purchase and due to being stored and never read is still new.
