This print is inspired by the actions of Group Captain Peter Townsend’s description of what happened while commanding the 85th Squadron during the Battle of Britain. His Flying Officer Jim Marshall, was struggling to keep his Hurricane in the air after a collision. Townsend stood guard over the plane and used hand signals to guide the crippled aircraft back to their base at RAF Debden. The damaged plane was able to land successfully. It was a typical act of unselfish leadership from one of the RAF’s most highly regarded fighter pilots.
Early in the war Townsend was credited with bringing down the first German plane on English soil. His wartime record was nine victories, two shared, two 'probable's' and four damaged.
From 1944 to 1953 Peter Townsend served as Equerry to King George VI.
