F4U Corsair At War
F4U Corsair At War
This book was written by Richard Abrams and published by Charles Scribner's Sons Publication in 1981 is a soft cover in New Condition. It was purchased by me at a aviation dinner/book signing in Tustin, California in 1992. It has been stored since purchase.
This book tells the story of the F4U Corsairs that were flown from February 1943 in Guadalcanal thru the Korean war and beyond. It is signed by a pilot that flew a Corsair in WW2, Col. William Farrell. . During WW2 near Okinawa he and three other corsair pilots while flying a security mission ran into 39 Japanese aircraft. Farrell and his wing leader were credited with downing a total of nine, which earned them ace status. Both Pilots were also awarded the Navy Cross. In the Pacific Theater during World War II, Corsairs downed 2,149 Japanese aircraft while flying 64,051 missions. Only 189 Corsairs were lost in combat in the Pacific Theater. Following WW2 it would not be long before Col. Farrell along with Corsairs went back into action in a new conflict. Shortly after North Korea invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950, the Corsair saw action. On July 3 the U.S. Navy launched Corsairs from the USS Valley Forge. These aircraft included 16 F4U-4B Corsairs loaded with rockets. The rocket-armed Corsairs struck enemy airfields and rail yards at Pyongyang without losing a single aircraft. This well written and heavily laden with pictures book will give you the complete history of the Corsair from WW11, Korea and beyond.
