Attack on Yamamoto
Attack on Yamamoto
Operation Vengeance was the American military operation to kill Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. The admiral was the mastermind behind the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and commander of the combined fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy at the time of his death. He was killed on Bougainville island when his transport aircraft was shot down by united States Air Forces Fighter aircraft operating from Kukum Field on Guadalcanal. This was not a random event as it was a result of the Americans breaking the Japanese naval code. They knew when and where Yamamoto was heading. With this advanced information a reception was prepared. Commander Major John W. Mitchell, already an ace pilot was chosen to lead the flight that consisted of eighteen P-38s. Of these a flight of four was designated as the "killer" flight, while the remainder would provide cover. Lieutenant Rex T. Barber was one of the designated pilots of the "kill" flight and ultimately was credited with shooting down of Admiral Yamamoto. This event was a big boast for the moral of the allies and very devastating to the Japanese. This book is very details about the mission written by Carroll V Glines and published in 1990.
The book was purchased new and has been stored since the purchase. It is in excellent shape. It has the following two signatures Major John W Mitchell & Lieutenant Rex T. Barber
