The Halifax four-engined heavy bomber flew no less than 75,000 operational sorties in World War II and together with the Lancaster formed the backbone of RAF Bomber Command. More than 6,000 Halifaxes came off the assembly lines of Handley Page and other companies sharing in the production. At the height of Britain’s bomber offensive against Germany, the Hallifax comprised 40 percent of the strength of the RAF Bomber Command.
