A little bit about Richard T “Dick” andrews

Flight officer Richard T. "Dick" Andrews flew in World War II in various campaigns and later served  in Vietnam..   Most notable  was his actions on August 4, 1944 which earned him the Silver Star. Many believe that his actions listed below  warranted a higher decoration — specifically, the Medal of Honor — as was Skyraider pilot Bernie Fisher in Vietnam for performing a very similar fete .  The members of the P-38 Association began a written campaign and petition to have Dick Andrews medal upgraded. After Dick passed away his family requested that they  discontinue their efforts in this regard.  The Association  strongly believed what he did was extraordinary and well worth the medal upgrade, but
are honoring the wishes of his family.

Citation for Award Of Silver star : Richard T Andrews T-124915, flight officer, 96th Fighter Sq 82nd Fighter Gp. for gallantry in action. On 4 August 1944, flight officer Andrews participated in a P-38 strafing raid against enemy airdromes in Rumania. A fellow pilot with both engines disabled forced landed on a field deep in enemy territory. With a most exceptional display of gallantry, cool judgement and flying skill, flight officer Andrews, at the greatest personal risk landed his own plane on the rough field alongside the wrecked P-38. By throwing out his own parachute, he barely made sufficient space in his cockpit for the stranded pilot. Jammed in the single seat cockpit for the stranded pilot. The unprecedented heroism, initiative and flying ability demonstrated far beyond the call of duty by flight officer Andrews in this gallant rescue of his fellow pilot from inevitable capture have reflected the greatest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States of America., Residence at appointment: Portland, Oregon.
